BURTON, SC (WTOC) -
Burton Firefighters worked a busy
Easter weekend as they responded to the scenes of four car accidents and two
building fires.
The four different car accidents
did cause delays in traffic and sent three people to Beaufort Memorial Hospital
to receive treatment for minor injuries. An engine fire did result from one of
the collisions but was small in size.
The first structure fire occurred
just before 10:30 p.m. on Saturday evening on Detour Road in Seabrook. A
garage/workshop located 50 feet behind a home caught on fire and quickly became
fully engulfed. The fire began to spread to vehicles and a shed close to
the structure. Firefighters quickly assembled and secured the fire,
despite a lack of hydrants in the Seabrook area. The building is a total loss,
but no one was injured in this incident. Beaufort and Sheldon Fire Departments
also responded to this call and helped in extinguishing the fire, which is
under investigation.
The second fire happened shortly
after 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning along Joe Frazier Road. Burton firefighters
responded to a single wide mobile home with fire coming from underneath the
home.Flames licked along the siding and spread out along the ground.
Burton Fire crews moved into action and quickly prevented the fire from
entering the home. The siding of the home was damaged, but no injuries were
reported as the home was not occupied. The fire is believed to be accidental
but will remain under investigation.
The Burton Fire District has
received over 1,000 emergency calls to date in 2017. Roughly 20 of these calls
were for structure fires and 96 of the calls involved car accidents. Of those
96 calls, 51 resulted in injuries.
