(Stillwater, Okla.) – A
referee accused of drunk driving east of Stillwater at Highway 51 and Highway
108 causing an accident resulting in serious injuries to one person including a
fractured spine and a fractured ankle, along with injuries to two other
persons, has been ordered to appear in Payne County District Court on June 5.
Vonree Russell Bennett,
46, of Stillwater, was originally charged with drunk driving before that
misdemeanor was dismissed and the case was re-filed in April as causing an
accident resulting in great bodily injury while driving under the influence of
alcohol shortly before 7 p.m. on Nov. 26, 2016, a felony punishable by four to
20 years in prison on conviction.
Bennett originally said
that he did not have any alcohol to drink that night, but later “stated he had
drunk one pint of Kentucky Derby after ‘reffing’ a game in Cleveland,” Oklahoma
Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Beck alleged in an affidavit filed with the
original misdemeanor charge.
Bennett smelled of
alcohol, the affidavit alleged.
“I asked Bennett if he
was okay and he stated he was fine, just his chest hurt. Bennett refused
medical treatment on scene,” the trooper alleged in his affidavit.
After the trooper
arrested Bennett for drunk driving, Bennett was transported to the Stillwater
Medical Center for a blood test, the results of which were not listed in the
affidavit, court records show.
Bennett remains free on
$1,000 bail pending his court appearance next month when he can seek a
preliminary hearing on the felony charge.
